August 12….Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase Concert Series
- The Buddy Holly Center is offering another hot summer of music and fun every Thursday evening. The Summer Showcase experience is an entertaining and innovative environment, where patrons can enjoy original and unique Texas-made music. Summer Showcase 2010 is free to the public. There will be a cash bar and beverages available for purchase. No outside beverages, coolers or food are allowed. Pete's Curbside will have food available to purchase.This week's performer is the Griffin Adams Band (West Texas rock 'n' roll). Buddy Holly Center, Meadows Courtyard, 1801 Crickets; 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.

August 13….'50s Nostlagia NightCome enjoy the nostalgic sounds of rock & roll that changed the face of pop music forever featuring artists Jason Fellers, Jeff Bailey, Keegan Peck, Angela Crowson, Tim McKenzie & the Lubbock Texas Rhythm Machine! Tickets are $25. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 7:30 p.m.

August 13 (repeats August 20-22; September 3-7)….Lubbock Moonlight Musicals presents: “Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story"The music of Buddy Holly has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world and this show tells the story of the tragically short life of a young man from Lubbock, who - along with his high-school friends formed a band called the Crickets - turned country music upside down to create some of the best rock ‘n’ roll songs ever written. We share Buddy’s frustrations through his first recording contract; the excitement America felt when ‘That’ll Be The Day’ hit #1; his naïve determination to be the first white act to play the Apollo Theatre in Harlem; his whirlwind romance and marriage; concluding with the ill-fated ‘Winter Dance Party’ tour of the Midwest. SATURDAY


August 14…."Fly the Rainbow" (Hot Air Balloon Event) - This event is a community outreach for persons who are wheelchair bound and will offer tethered rides to them, upon availability. The air balloon basket will fold down on one side so the wheelchair may be rolled up into the basket with the pilot. Plan to come and observe (You are welcome to bring a lawn chair or watch from your car). What an "uplifting" way to start the day! This is an annual event and everyone is invited. August 14….Green Thumb Pond Tours -
There will be seven ponds available to tour, along with time to ask questions to each pond's creator questions. Tickets to the Pond Tours are $10 each. Tickets may be purchased at Green Thumb (8703 19th Street), Sparkman's Nursery (111th & Slide Road), The Lubbock Memorial Arboretum (4111 University Ave.) or by calling 799-7663. A map to the pond locations will be given with ticket purchases. Proceeds from the Pond Tours will be given to CASA. 8 a.m.- 6 p.m.

August 14….Black-Eyed Pea Day at Apple Country Orchards
There will be fresh apple pancakes and sausage starting at 9 a.m. with proceeds to benefit the South Plains Food Bank GRUB kids, free hayrides through the Orchard, lots of apple picking, and fresh black-eyes from the gardens. Lunch will include BBQ brisket and fresh picked black-eyed peas. There will also be peach and apple pies, turnovers and fresh peaches just picked from the orchard. Apple Country Orchards, 4 miles east of Idalou on Hwy 62; 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.

August 14….Downtown Art Market -
This outdoor event features over 30 local artists and growers all showcasing their work. Booths will be set up in the Gallery, the Artlab next door, the Gallery garden and along the sidewalks on Buddy Holly. Paintings, leather work, metal work, crafts and other media will be featured this month. The local growers will have early veggies and fruits as well as plants and cut flowers. Come downtown and see what all the talk is about, meet your friends and celebrate this cultural district event! More local artists are encouraged to show their work in a booth. August 14….Lubbock Memorial Arboretum Second Saturday Program - Dr. Jyotsna Sharma, Assistant Professor of Environmental Horticulture at Texas Tech University will present the second half of her program on “Rare and Endangered Plants and Orchids”. The response from her first program was overwhelmingly positive, and there was so much discussion that Dr. Sharma was unable to finish her presentation! She has agreed to return and complete her program this Saturday. Lubbock Memorial Arboretum, 4111 South University Avenue; 9:30 p.m. refreshments, 10 a.m.- program.

August 14…. Re/Max World Long Drive Championship - Attention: long ball hitters, if you are a long ball hitter. . . or want to watch this "extreme golf". . . be at the Texas Tech Rawls Course this Saturday. Eat some carbs, grab a big stick and compete in Golf on the Edge! This event is the local qualifier. The regional is September 11th & 12th in Dallas, and nationals is October 27th in Mesquite, Nevada. Cost: $ 40.00 per 6 Balls. Registration is on site beginning at noon. For more info call 785-5363. (Re-scheduled from the rain-out on July 4th)….Lubbock’s Got Talent - The show must go on! 4th on Broadway's talent contestants finally get their chance to prove to Lubbock "they" have talent! Admission is free...so be sure and come support your favorite contestant. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 7:30 p.m.

Gerald Dolter is stage director; Jacob Miller will conduct. John Davis stars as Willy Wonka, with Benjamin Betts as Charlie Bucket and Mark Martin as Grandpa Joe. August 14….Summer Movies in the Park
- The Tech Terrace-U.N.I.T. Neighborhood Association presents “Up” free of charge. All are welcomed! Bring a blanket, a snack and a friend! Beginning at 8:15 p.m. there will be organized games for the kids before the movie starts. In case of rain, the movie will be shown the following Saturday. Wagner Park, 26th Street and Flint Avenue. Movie will begin around sundown....a little after 9 p.m.
